Some 140Km from Prasat Surin is Korat Zoo. It is an international standard Zoo with many animals from around the world. Make sure you get there early as it takes all day to see everything.

It’s more than just a zoo, with a kids motorbike track and water park, it’s the perfect way to spend the time away in the Isaan sunshine.

Chinese Festival in Thailand

Every year just 100m from the Leelawadee Gardens the locals celebrate the Chinese Festival known as Neew. Lasting 3 nights, you can enjoy Chinese opera and theatre, plus Thai music. There are also many stalls where games can be played and prizes won, plus food stalls galore.

Songkran Water Festival 2009

Songkran is the name for Thai new year which is held each year between 13-15th of April. The word Songkran is taken from Sanskrit meaning a move or change, and was originally set by astrological calculation. It is celebrated in Loas, Cambodia and Myanmar too where it is known as ‘pee mai loa’ ,’ Chaul Chnam Thmey’ and respectively.

Modern day Thai New Year means for many who visit Thailand the worlds largest water fight. It is a national public holiday and the festival lasts for 3 days in most places around the country, though it seems to last longer in the tourist resorts such as Pattaya. Many Thai’s go and visit their family and will take time to visit a temple.

Songkran is celebrated in Isaan with the same vigour as any where else, and here in Surin the foreign community love to take part in the events. This year at the Leelawadee Gardens we had a fancy dress party on the 13th, where all were encouraged to dress as Ladyboys ( Katoey). Many of our friends traveled up from Pattaya and Bangkok, and joined in the fun. In the evening we all went up to the Harley Bar where we enjoyed Paul and Nuengs hospitality plus a free BBQ.

Surin and the Thai Elephant 2009

Surin hosts the world famous Elephant round up every November. It is the celebration of the Thai elephant, and is the worlds largest organised elephant event. Started in 1960 and organised by the the tourism authority of Thailand it helps promote awareness of the the Elephant in Thailand.

The magnificent Thai elephant has long been a fundamental part of Thai history. With its power and grace, the elephant was honored by kings in times past.Elephants have figured prominently in Thai folklore, literature, art and architecture, even featuring on the nation’s flag, when previously known as Siam.

The Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village in the North of Surin Province is the home of the Suay, who have tended to, and trained elephants throughout Thailand. The Thai Elephant is treated like a family member by their handlers and are respected by all. There is now an Elephant conversation park in Ban Ta Klang, which can be visited daily. You can get elephant rides around the park, and all donations are used to help save the elephants and their habitat.

Elephants and their mahouts descend on Surin for a week long festival known as the Elephant Round up.

Phanom Rung

This beautiful Khmer ruin is the largest example of Khmer Architecture in Thailand. Located on top of a dormant volcano, Phanom Rung has been regarded as site of holy Significance since the seventh century. It was built by Suryavarman II in the early twelfth century and was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. There are many well preserved Lintels showing examples of Shiva.

Phanom Rung is some 55 Km from the Leelawadee Gardens Prasat Surin, and is situated in the neighboring province of Buri Ram. There is a museum, and many gift shops located before the entrance. Two tier pricing exists, although it is not as drastic as others. It is 100B for foreigners and 20B for Thai’s. Thai massage is available and there are also a number of restaurants.
